The Brief
How to Hide a Lighthouse
HOE Neighbourhood Forum formed with the ambitions of bringing together a true mixture of stakeholders in an area full of heritage. However, the most ambitious aspect of this project was the clients request to include the Eddystone lighthouse in some way.
They acknowledged that many Plymouth based companies in all sorts of sectors used variations of the typical red and white lighthouse for their logo, and that it was overused. But the lighthouse sits front and centre to the forums neighbourhood boundary, and so they felt it should be included, just not the same way as how others had.
The Solution
What makes this project extra special, is how receiving a gift from a previous client, a Tony Robinson tour of Plymouth, led us to the Eddystone Lighthouse Pavement.
The lighthouse was heralded because it was the first time a dovetail joint construction method had been used in this way. The joints offered superior strength, which was especially important with the lighthouse situated approx 15 miles out into
Discovering this element and its significance, it felt like a perfect embodiment of what the forum was attempting to achieve.
Togetherness, new ideas, and strong foundations.
The pavement is situated in Plymouth on the outskirts of the Hoe and opposite the Plymouth Pavillions. It shows the construction of the Eddystone Lighthouse dovetail joints, a first of its kind for this application. The interlocking stones provided strength, and we felt, perfectly, symbolised qualities the forum hoped to also demonstrate.

The Solution
The lighthouse foundations provided the pattern to build our symbol, representing the lighthouse both visually and by sharing the same values as the forum. It is a shape that is discoverable allowing HNF to tell this story over time and make elements ownable to its stakeholders.
